What happens at an instrument try-on?

When you sign up for an instrument try-on, your child will select three instruments to try. One of our music try-on staff will show him/ her how to make sounds on the instruments so that everyone can see what instruments are easy and comfortable.  This is a great way to see what instrument “fits” your child well and gives him/ her the greatest chance at success!

The instrument try-on is a no pressure, fun way to explore the various instruments, meet the teachers and find out more about performing arts!   We do not eliminate children from participation based on the instrument try-on.  The time we spend with your child during the instrument try-on helps us to provide an appropriate placement for him or her.  We highly encourage parent participation in the process!

What kind of time commitment is involved?

All band and orchestra classes meet during the regular school day. Because we know students are very busy, after school requirements are at a minimum. Our evening activities are limited to three nights per year when the students present their concerts. Dates for these events will be given to all students and parents the first week of school. Students in band or orchestra are also responsible for practicing their instrument at home. 

Can I still participate in after school activities if I am in Band or Orchestra?

Yes!!!  Because  band and orchestra rehearsals are during the school day, you can easily participate in after school activities without conflict.  A large percentage of our student musicians are active in other school groups.

When can I start?

Most of our students are very anxious to begin playing their instruments right away! A two-week summer program for beginning band and orchestra students has been scheduled from June 10-June 21, 2024. The students will meet for 50-minute classes each morning (Monday – Friday). Specific times for each class will be provided prior to Spring Break. Because of the smaller class size and like-instrument instruction, these classes will help your child get a great start on his or her instrument! It is strongly recommended that all beginning instrumental students participate in the summer classes. 

What is summer band/ orchestra, and what if I cannot attend?

Summer Band and Orchestra classes will take place for ten days in June for 50 minutes each day. The big advantage of the summer classes is to have smaller classes only with students who play the same instrument (flutes with flutes, etc.) You will learn the basics of playing your instrument and even learn to play some fun songs! You will also get to meet new friends before you even start 6th grade! We hope that every student can attend the summer classes, but if you are not able, we suggest that you take a few private lessons on your new instrument over the summer so that you are ready when school starts.

What is the cost of participation?

The primary expense of band and orchestra participation is that of providing an instrument for your child.  Most parents will choose to rent an instrument at the start.  Rental fees for instruments are very affordable and apply toward ownership of the instruments.  More information can be found at www.paigesmusic.com
